ASSISTANCE TO A GRANDSON/GRANDDAUGHTER

» Concept

Justified absence from work:

» On the occasion of birth of a grandson/granddaughter who lives in the same household with the public employee and is son/daughter of adolescent under 16 years of age

» To provide urgent and necessary assistance to grandchildren instead of the parent, in the case of illness or accident

» Personal scope

Grandmother or equivalent

» Material scope

» On the occasion of birth of a grandson/granddaughter who lives in the same household with the public employee and is son/daughter of adolescent under 16 years of age

» Up to 30 consecutive days following the birth or,

» If there are two holders of the right, the period of absences may be enjoyed only by one of them, or together on a part time basis or in successive periods

» To provide urgent and necessary assistance to grandchildren, instead of the parent, in the case of illness or accident

» Up to 30 days per year or during the period of possible inpatient treatment, in the case of grandson/granddaughter under 12 years of age, or irrespective of the age, in the case of grandson/granddaughter with disability or chronic disease

» Up to 15 days per year, to provide care to a minor grandson/granddaughter over 12 years of age

Note

The enjoyment of the referred to periods of absences are not added to those legally attributed to parents of minors, being only available those which are not enjoyed by these ones

» Formalities

In the assistance to a grandson/granddaughter who lives in the same household with the public employee, this one shall inform the public employer within 5 days in advance, by stating that:

» The grandson/granddaughter lives with him/her in the same household

» The grandson/granddaughter is son/daughter of adolescent under the age of 16 years

» The spouse of the public employee performs professional activity; and is physically or psychically unable to take care of the grandson/granddaughter or does not live in the same household with this one

In the assistance to a grandson/granddaughter instead of parents, the public employee shall inform the public employer within 5 days in advance or, if unpredictable, as soon as possible, by stating:

» The urgent and necessary nature of the assistance

» That the parents are public employees and that are not absent for the same reason or are unable to provide assistance and that no other member of the family of the same degree is absent for the same ground
