» Objective and protection in the invalidity and old-age

» Guarantee a benefit substitutive of the work income lost, when the beneficiary is under the following situations:

- Permanent incapacity for the fulfillment of functions or of any work whatsoever, for non-professional reason - invalidity

- When attains the age legally presumed as appropriate to terminate the professional practice ? old-age

» It is materialized through the grant of a lifetime reirement pension, paid by the National Pension Centre of the Social Security Institute (Centro Nacional de Pensões)

» Conditions to grant the retirement pension

Common to invalidity and old-age

» Affiliation to social security institutions

» Request

» Compliance with the minimum period of contributions paid

- consecutive or interpolated 5 or 3 calendar years in the case of relative or absolute invalidity, respectively

- 15 consecutive or interpolated calendar years, in the case of old-age

» Time calculation

One calendar year shall be calculated provided that there are, at least, 120 days with compensation registration or equivalent situation ? minimum period of contributions paid. This minimum period may be met by recourse to the total contribution periods in other social protection schemes, provided that they are not overlapped

Specific of the invalidity

» Relative invalidity

- Certification, by the Incapacity Checking Service (ICS), of permanent incapacity of which results the impossibility of receiving in the profession (function) more than 1/3 of the compensation corresponding to the normal fulfilment

- It is also recognised provided that may be presumed that the beneficiary shall not recover, within the 3 subsequent years, the capacity to receive in the performance of the profession (function) more than 50% of the corresponding compensation

» Absolute invalidity

Certification, by the ICS, of permanent and definitive incapacity for all and any profession or work whatsoever, situation confirmed provided that the beneficiary shall not presents capacities of remaining gain nor is presumed that may recover of such capacities until attain the access legal age to old-age pension

Specific of old-age

Age equal or higher than 66 years
