SOCIAL PROTECTION

» Framework

Pursuant to the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the social security system shall protect citizens in illness, old age, disability, widowhood and orphanhood as well as in the unemployment and in any other situations that entails a lack of or reduction in means of subsistence or ability to work

The social protection of public employees fulfilling public functions is materialized through integration in the Social Security General Scheme (SSGS) or in the Convergent Social Protection Scheme (CSPS)

The integration in any of these schemes depends upon the public employee have been covered by the former ? Civil Service Social Protection Scheme - (CSSPS) or by the SSGS. All public employees of public employers entered after 1 January 2006 are compulsorily framed in this latter scheme

Eventualities (material scope)

The social protection of public employees fulfilling public functions is framed in the social security scheme and:

It ensures, in any of the schemes, cash benefits replacing work incomes lost as a result of the following eventualities:

» illness

» maternity, paternity and adoption (parenthood)

» unemployment

» accidents at work and occupational diseases

» disability

» old age

» death (survivor's pension and death allowance)

It ensures benefits in the scope of family protection in the following eventualities:

» family charges

» disability charges

» dependence charges
